Not everyone gets to be a grandparent. There are many steps that are out of our control and sometimes out of the control of our children.
I was so keen to get started that I asked a wonderful teacher and mother to be if I could play some of that role for her unborn child. She was willing to include me and now I am Grandma Kim to her three children. Even though I moved away from the family, we stay in touch by snail mail, FaceBook Messenger, Marco Polo and the like. I love writing to them, reading stories on Marco Polo and supporting their celebrations and holidays. I love their videos, letters and messages. It’s wonderful to see them grow, enjoying so much in life.
These days, we can create our own relationships that allow us to share our love and knowledge with the children in our lives, whether its through friendship or blood ties. In the process we find that the children and their parents can teach us so much about how things are done in the early 21st century.
